Health Indicators

Determinants of health are the factors that most significantly impact peoples' health. Our ability to identify and understand how to address the factors impacting a population's health directly impacts global health (Skolnik, 2021).

Singapore's health indicators include childhood immunization, demographic and socioeconomic status, availability of financial support for health services, healthcare provider availability, and population density (World Health Organization, 2018). The leading cause of death in Singapore is cancer with pneumonia and ischemic heart disease rated second and third respectively (Ministry of Health, 2019).

Similar to the top health indicator in the United States, among the top health indicators in Singapore is access to healthcare services. Government support for healthcare services and availability of providers present a challenge for both countries. In the United States there is 1 full time physician for every 339 citizens while Singapore has 1 physician for every 416 citizens (Young et al., 2016) .

The risk factors affecting Singapore's health include poor diet (excess salt/sodium intake), alcohol and tobacco use, physical inactivity, high blood pressure, diabetes obesity, and air pollution (Noncommunicable Diseases (NCD) Country Profiles, 2018).
